Baruch dayan emet: Abraham Brumberg
Abraham Brumberg, a writer who specialized in Eastern European subjects, especially the treatment of Jews in the former Soviet bloc, died January 26 at his home in Chevy Chase, Md. He was 81.
The New York Times ran an obituary in today’s paper.
Brumberg’s work appeared in the Times, Dissent, Granta, Foreign Affairs, The New Republic, The New York Review of Books and The Nation.
He also wrote several books, including a memoir, “Journeys Through Vanishing Worlds” (New Academia, 2007). According to the Times, he also edited several anthologies, among them “Russia Under Khrushchev” (Praeger, 1962), “Poland: Genesis of a Revolution” (Random House, 1983), and “Chronicle of a Revolution: A Western-Soviet Inquiry Into Perestroika” (Pantheon, 1990).
In addition to his political writing, Brumberg participated in efforts to preserve the Yiddish language.
